On Wednesday, 16 May, in connection with the day of «Nakba», a general strike in the Arab sector was declared. This could provoke further violence motivated by the conflict between Palestinians and Israelis around Jerusalem, Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova said during a traditional briefing in Kerch.
«On 14 May, there were mass demonstrations of Palestinians. 59 Palestinians were killed, hundreds were injured. In total, over a hundred people died during the conflict.
Today I can say that on the occasion of «Nakba Day» in Palestine, a general strike and the risks of continuing violence are extremely high.
We reaffirm the Palestinians’ right to peaceful protests. We urge to refrain from escalating the conflict,» the diplomat said.
According to her, the world community should promote peace between Israelis and Palestinians, and not take unilateral steps.
«Jerusalem must become the capital of two states. We need direct Palestinian-Israeli negotiations and we will support this,» Zakharova said.
Disorders broke out on Monday and became the most massive in the last 5 years. The reason for the unrest was the opening of the American embassy in Jerusalem. The Palestinians consider it to be their occupied territory. An aggravation of the situation is discussed at once in several major international organizations.
The Nakba Day for the Palestinians is primarily concerned with the «expulsion and flight» of some 700,000 Arab refugees, with the lost Arab-Israeli wars and the loss of their homeland and property.
