Russia is ready to cooperate on the world arena in matters of nuclear weapons, but without infringing upon its interests, Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova said in a briefing on 6 December in response to the US representative’s accusations.
Earlier, the senior director for non-proliferation of weapons of mass destruction in the White House National Security Council, Christopher Ford, believes that Moscow should take care of the security of its nuclear infrastructure. According to him, Russia’s withdrawal from almost all aspects of bilateral cooperation to ensure the security of nuclear materials can lead to a reduction in security at some sites of the Russian nuclear complex.
«The issue of the size of our nuclear complex and the costs of its maintenance refers to the internal competence of the Russian Federation. The Russian Federation is open to cooperation on nuclear issues, but we do not have the right to take any approaches that do not meet our interests, «Zakharova said.
A spokesman for the diplomatic mission also pointed out that «the accusations made by Mr. Ford that the chemical demilitarization of Syria was almost orchestrated by Russia in such a way that the Syrian authorities could hide part of their reserves to use later, are simply absurd.»
«The elimination of these weapons was carried out under strict control and through an agreement, including with the United States. At the end of 2015, it was announced that it was destroyed,» she recalled.
