It is unacceptable and immoral to make politics on the human grief. So the official representative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Russia Maria Zakharova commented on the attempts of the Lithuanian authorities to politicize the tragic events of 1991 at the Vilnius TV tower, the press service of the Foreign Ministry said on Monday.
«This approach does not cause nothing but regret», — said Zakharova. She added that Vilnius grossly distorts the facts, which are interpreted in a one-sided, lucrative Lithuania key to the detriment of historical objectivity.
Zakharova noted that from this follows the illegitimate nature of the shameful trial in the Lithuanian capital in the case «January 13, 1991». She recalled that the colonel of the reserve of the Russian army, Yuri Mel, was still being held in a Lithuanian prison.
The Foreign Ministry reported that Vilnius’s chosen way of settling historical score with Russia is a dead end.
«It’s time to turn the page related to the tragic events at the Vilnius TV tower, giving historians the opportunity to calmly and unbiassedly comprehend that difficult period,» said Maria Zakharova.
According to the Lithuanian authorities, when attempting to storm the Soviet military on 13 January, 1991, the television tower and the Radio and TV Committee in Vilnius, 14 people died, 31 were seriously injured, and more than 1,000 people were injured in other degrees of severity. In the trial, former Soviet officers Gennady Ivanov and the Russian citizen Yuri Mely, arrested in Lithuania, are closely involved.
Mel, a resident of the Kaliningrad region, was detained in March 2014 at the border checkpoint in Panaymun on the border with the Kaliningrad region.
