In Washington after three-day talks, a consensus was reached on a draft agreement on counteracting unregulated fishing in the open waters of the Arctic Ocean.
Representatives of the «Arctic five» — ??Russia, Canada, the USA, Denmark (Greenland) and Norway, as well as the PRC, Japan, the Republic of Korea, the EU and Iceland were involved in the meeting.
As the press service of Rosrybolovstvo reports, the position of the Russian Federation on this issue was accepted as a basis. In particular, the special role of the coastal states in the Arctic is fixed, and the mechanism of decision-making is coordinated. It was also noted that all the countries recognized the impossibility of concluding this Arctic Treaty without the participation of Russia. Then the legal design of the text will follow.
In general, the essence of the agreement is to prevent uncontrolled catch of bioresources in the region, until it is thoroughly studied.
