The Syrian Arab Republic recognized the independence of Abkhazia and decided to establish diplomatic relations with Sukhum, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Abkhazia said on Tuesday.
«The Republic of Abkhazia and the Syrian Arab Republic announce mutual recognition and establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries at the embassy level, which reflects their common desire to develop relations in all areas,» the communique said.
The day before, on 28 May, a tripartite meeting of the ambassadors of the Republic of Abkhazia, the Syrian Arab Republic and the Republic of South Ossetia took place in Russia, during which the ambassadors agreed on the text and the date of the release of the communique, exchanged relevant notes.
The Russian Federation recognized the independence of Abkhazia and South Ossetia on 26 August, 2008. After that, Abkhazia and South Ossetia were recognized by Nicaragua, Venezuela, Nauru, Vanuatu, Tuvalu.
In the UN documents, Abkhazia is considered as the territory of Georgia, according to the administrative division of which the region is occupied by the Abkhazian Autonomous Republic.
