The armed forces of Russia and Belarus have launched a joint strategic exercise «Zapad-2017», the press service of the Russian Defense Ministry said.
Leaders and commanders of military units received packages with directive instructions from the General Staff of the armed forces of the Union State to carry out combat training tasks. At six polygons in the Republic of Belarus and three test sites in Russia, there will be a series of tactical episodes with live firing, extensive use of the forces and assets of aviation and air defense forces.
The main objectives of the exercise are to improve the interoperability of headquarters at various levels and to manage troops based on the experience of modern armed conflicts.
In the joint strategic military exercise, up to 12,700 servicemen, about 70 aircraft and helicopters, 680 units of combat equipment, including 250 tanks and about 10 warships take part.
It is noted that «Zapad-2017» is the final stage of joint training of the armed forces of the two states. The exercises are purely defensive in nature and are not directed against any state.
