The second act of the drama of Prime Minister Therese May called the parliamentary elections in Great Britain is played out on 9 June, the day after the vote. May, calling for early elections, said that the elections will strengthen the ruling conservative party, increase support for the course pursued by the authorities, strengthen the position in the negotiations on Brexit. However, conservative party apparently will lose the parliamentary majority, judging by the preliminary results of the vote. 315 out of 650 seats in the House of Commons may be occupied by the «Tory». In fact, the Labor Party managed to strengthen its positions: an increase of 31 seats is expected — up to 261. The parliamentary majority is at least 326 seats. And before the election, «Tory» had such a majority. The party is deprived of 12 seats.
In absolute terms, according to preliminary calculations, 13 568 734 people voted for conservatives, 12 824 729 for Labor. The difference is in more than 770 thousand voices. However, later the number of votes «for May» increased to 13,650,918, which already provides 318 seats to conservatives in parliament.
The May case is that, having shown the initiative to use early elections supposedly for successful negotiations on the UK’s exit from the European Union, it actually stepped on Brexit, and received a blow to the forehead, as in the case of rake. Moreover, in addition to May’s lost face, conservatives will not be able to form a government — they will have to take into account the opinion of other parties.
Jeremy Corbin, leader of the Labor Party, called on May to resign, as a result of the general election»at her command, at her request,» the parliament found itself without a majority 11 days before the talks. Support is lost, voices are lost, mandate is lost, Corbin makes a conclusion.
This is not serious. Or, adhering to the conspiracy version, we can assume that in those elections in the UK, that part of the elite that at heart sincerely did not want Brexit won. European leaders say that the United Kingdom is not ready for negotiations. For example, Czech Prime Minister Bohuslav Sobotka.
And the chief negotiator for Brexit Michel Barnier, as if pouring oil into the fire, evasively stated that the negotiations would begin then, the code of the UK would be ready. In the EU, there is a clear timetable, a position — it remains only to conclude a deal.
The head of the European Council, Donald Tusk, said that he did not know when the negotiations would begin, and asked to do everything to avoid the situation «the deal did not take place, because there were no negotiations.»
Journalists of the London edition JOE did a tweet on the video, in which the «talking head» of Therese May broadcasts from the crucifix, in the company with crucified David Cameron.
A video-taunt had appeared before the media reported that May would visit Buckingham Palace and ask the Queen permission to form the government. The conservatives allegedly agreed to form a coalition with the surprisingly right-centrist Democratic Unionist Party (DUP), which receives 10 mandates. The party (against abortion, against LGBT) is popular only in Northern Ireland, where they voted for it.
But this possible solution is already called a political mistake. DUP in the UK has more opponents than supporters, and a conservative alliance with them seems ridiculous.
Nicola Sturgeon, the head of the Scottish government, stated that Theresa May had lost influence. However, the Scottish People’s Party (SNP), headed by Sturgeon, according to preliminary results, lost 19 seats in the parliament. And the victory of the Scottish «Tories» in some polling stations in Scotland provided the Conservatives with 13 mandates. At the same time, Sturgeon thanked the voters, adding that the SNP won in Scotland.
«However, we had bitter disappointments, and I am very grateful to all our brilliant candidates who were not reelected. Now we will carefully reflect on the results and move forward in the interests of the whole Scotland. In the UK, we will strive to work with others to put an end to the severity [in relation to business],» she said.
Also, Sturgeon admitted that the key factor in the defeat of the SNP was the idea of holding a referendum on the independence of Scotland. It is not excluded that in the future she will abandon this plan.
The situation did not prevent Therese May herself from making a short appeal to the nation, in which she announced that the government would still form. The statement was made after the meeting with the British Queen.
«This government will direct the country from the crucial negotiations on Brexit, which begin only 10 days before the will of the British people, leading the United Kingdom out of the European Union. The government will work to ensure the security and protection of the people … «, she said.
May clarified that she plans to eradicate the ideology of Islamic extremism and «all those who support it.» To this end, representatives of various authorities and police will expand their powers. She seemed not to have paid attention to the loss of the parliamentary majority, and she called the election of Unionists and conservatives legitimate. According to her, for two years the parties have cooperated, which gives her confidence in the opportunity to work «for the benefit of the United Kingdom.»
«Now let’s work,» May concluded.
As they say, checkmate. The president of the European Council, Donald Tusk, had nothing to congratulate May on the successful completion of the «special operation» and the reappointment to the post of prime minister.
«Our common responsibility and urgent task now is to negotiate the withdrawal of the UK from the European Union in the best way, ensuring the least destructive outcome for our citizens, businesses and countries after March 2019,» Tusk wrote in a congratulatory letter.
At the end of June, he expects May in the European Union to discuss issues of combating terrorism, defense, trade, security and the Paris Climate Agreement.
