According to media reports, the US President Donald Trump threatened to withdraw from the Iranian nuclear program, motivating this by Tehran’s non-compliance with the agreements and the newly awakening nuclear ambitions. Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation Sergey Lavrov calls on the American leader to think well before making hasty decisions. He said this on 6 October at a press conference after meeting with his counterpart from Kazakhstan Kairat Abdrakhmanov.
«I do not like to comment on rumors. We hear signals from the White House about Trump’s doubts whether to continue to participate in the settlement of the Iranian nuclear program. This program makes a real contribution to the non-proliferation of nuclear weapons and it is important to preserve it. And, of course, US participation will be an important factor. Therefore, we hope that the existing contacts will not be in vain and the final decision of the American President will be well-considered,» the head of the Russian diplomatic department commented.
According to the state media, Trump believes that Iran does not respect the spirit of the 2015 nuclear deal and is trying to obtain nuclear weapons. He gave to representatives of military departments a signal to prevent such a threat.
Let’s remind, the agreement itself began to operate from 16 January, 2016, and sanctions were gradually lifted from Iran, but in July this year a law was passed on new sanctions against Tehran. In August, the Iranian president said he would sever the nuclear deal with the US if Washington continued its policy.
